It's the very first school of its kind in Iowa...an online public grade school. The Iowa Virtual Academy is for children in grades K through sixth, any student in Iowa can start taking classes this fall. Academy staffers say this is a great opportunity for parents who've considered homeschooling their kids.

"Students who need to move a little bit faster and they get board in a traditional school setting, but with this they can move onto the next lesson if they're ready.

And on the other side, they have students who might take them a little longer, and they have that opportunity to work a little bit longer," explained Rachel Hagan, an Iowa Development Manager for the program.

So it's official... Online classes are not just for college students anymore. Many parents are just blown away by the idea of an elementary student taking online classes, and even though they know technology is growing, some are a bit skeptical about the program.

But when Emilee was a little girl, her future as a happy, productive adult wasn’t so clear. “In the fifth grade I began coming home from school in tears,” she told me. “I was often bored, waiting for the other kids to catch up. USA Today Reports More Secular Homeschooling Parents are Turning Up

DUNELLEN, N.J. – There was a time when Heather Kirchner thought mothers who home-schooled their children were only the types "who wore long skirts and praised Jesus and all that."That was before the New Jersey resident decided to home-school her own daughter, Anya.

Kirchner favors jeans, and like the two dozen other families that are part of the year-old Homeschool Village Co-op in Central Jersey, she doesn't consider herself to be particularly religious. Homeschooling Rights in Sweden Threatened

PURCELLVILLE, Va., Feb. 14, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ -- Amidst increasing persecution in Sweden, beleaguered homeschool families look to the United States for help.

One homeschool family, the Himmelstrands, chose to homeschool their three children for years before they were denied permission from their municipality in 2008. Now the Himmelstrands face fines in excess of $26,000 (US).

Jonas Himmelstrand, president of the Swedish Association for Home Education, appealed yesterday to the supporters in the United States and around the world, "We ask our fellow home educators to email the Swedish authorities on a mass scale about the situation in Sweden. We want to let Swedish officials know that their actions have drawn international attention. Please write to the Swedish Embassy in your country on our behalf."

Although it is likely that there are fewer than 100 homeschoolers in the country of 9 million, Jonas says the persecution "is against all international conventions on human rights."

Homeschoolers in the United States have started to respond.

The Homes School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and the Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) have filed a brief in a Swedish appellate court on behalf of the family. Michael Donnelly, HSLDA's Director of International Relations, explains the gravity of the Swedish, "Homeschooling is legal in the United States and in many other countries only after decades of tumultuous legislative and legal conflicts.

Swedish families are now fighting for their basic rights and are looking for support from other freedom lovers abroad. I am asking all of my fellow citizens to join me in supporting the Himmelstrands and other families in Sweden who want to homeschool."

Can Homeschoolers Play High School Sports?

Patrick Foss is a top teenage soccer player who plans to graduate a semester early and enter the University of Virginia next January. His neighbor is a point guard on the local public high school basketball team in northern Virginia.

Next fall, Patrick, 17, would like to try out as a kicker on the football team at Freedom High School in South Riding, Va., but he is home-schooled and thus ineligible.

“My parents pay the same exact taxes as my next-door neighbor who plays varsity sports,” he said. “I just want to be part of the community. You shouldn’t have to pick between athletics and academics.”

A hotly contested bill that passed the Republican-controlled House in the Virginia Assembly on Wednesday would change that, permitting home-schooled students to play varsity sports at public high schools. The Virginia bill is the latest attempt by home-schooling advocates around the country to gain greater access to extracurricular activities at public schools.

The Cure for Homeschool Dorkiness

There are many stereotypes about homeschoolers. Though most are not true, we genuinely earn some of them.

One of those is that homeschoolers are socially awkward geeks. Yup, that pretty much sums it up, at least in my case.

You know how some girls react to Justin Bieber? I react in a similar way to Charles Dickens and Masterpiece Theatre and Greek epics. I’ve been known to swoon over grammar. Prairie Home Companion has been my favorite since, like, junior high. I laugh at linguistic jokes. My favorite? Winston Churchill’s secretary rabidly corrected his dangling participles, constantly sending memos back with corrections. Finally, Churchill sent him a memo that read, “This is something up with which I shall not put!”

That gets me rolling every. Single. Time.

Homescooling in Texas

Homeschooling is on the rise in Texas. Families like the Beltons are choosing to homeschool their children. Mr Belton says, "... he and his wife were inspired by other family members who homeschooled their children and decided to try it themselves."

Tim Labert, president of the Texas Home School Coalition sites that homeschooling continues to increase on average 10-15 percent each year.

Texas parents have the right to homeschool under Texas case law — specifically Leeper et al. v. Arlington ISD et al— a 1994 state Supreme Court case that determined that a child learning at home using a curriculum that meets basic education goals is exempt from mandatory school attendance just as a child who attends a private school would be.

Those "basic goals" include lessons in reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and citizenship.

"It's up to parents to choose the curriculum and decide how to administer it," said Lambert.

Public School's Dirty Little Secrets and Why Homeschoolers do it different

1. Curriculum is a fancy word to intimidate you. All it really means is that these are the textbooks we are using to make sure we all teach the same thing. Curriculum just refers to books and programs.

2. Curriculum is arranged that way to make it easier for teachers. They group things together by grade so that they make sure everything is covered. Think of a conveyor belt assembly line then put your kid on it.

3. Public school assumes every child is the same. We went to see Irving Berlin's White Christmas on stage at the Sergerstom Theatre. Talk about talented individuals. They tapped up a storm. I'm guessing that many of them should never have been required to sit through a calculus class.

4. Public school is governed by politicians that are trying to make everyone happy. Individual teacher's may care about your kids. I know many that do. But overall, the administrators are judged on performance and test scores.

5. Public school is broken and it may not be fixed any time soon. But you have options. And homeschooling may not be perfect but it can be adapted to the needs of the kid, not the system.

Homeschooling in Sweden: Not so Good

Homeschooling is Sweden is not what it is in the United States. A couple's nine year old son was taken from them 2 years ago by Swedish authorities because they chose to homeschool him.

“I am hopeful that this is the beginning of the end to the horrific treatment these people have suffered at the hands of Swedish authorities over the past two and a half years,” states Donnelly. “The Johansson family has endured unspeakable tyranny over their decision to homeschool their child and then to attempt to leave Sweden. Sweden’s behavior in this case has been shocking.”

The Swedish Social Services Committee first sought to terminate the parental rights of Annie and Christer Johansson in October 2011. The latest decision by the Gotland court against social services marks a significant departure from previous decisions in the Johansson’s case. Swedish courts had also previously removed Harrold-Claesson from the Johansson case.

Is Public School Really Free?

There's a huge debate going on around the web. Our society tells us that public school is free but is it really free. Take a closer look. You might reconsider homeschooling.

//Clothing Kids tend to have a larger wardrobe to attend public school. There's peer pressure and kids feel the need to compete more with other kids. Some public schools even require a student to wear a uniform. And the parents must pay for this.

//Health Kids go to school all the time when they are sick. They spread the germs around. Your kid gets sick. Some illnesses require a doctor's visit, time off work for a parent and medicine. Having a bunch of kids in a small classroom breathing recycled air all day, five days a week is unhealthy and it cost our families and our society.

// Fundraisers Would you like to buy some cookie dough? Of course you don't but if your kid attends public school, you are guilted into participating. Kids feel the pressure and so do adults. Fundraisers are a big money drain for families in public school.

//Environment Kids ride buses to school. And the buses spew forth big black pollution. Where I live the busses usually have less than 15 kids on board. Because parents must pay for bus service. So instead all the moms drive their mini-buses to drop their kids off each day. With high gas prices and the environmental impact, this can add up.

Let's contrast this to homeschooling. You can choose to go with a public homeschooling option like K12 that offers free homeschooling. They mail you your books and do some work online.

Your children can have less clothing because they do not have the peer pressure that is evident in public schools. (That doesn't mean they have to look weird.)

They eat healthy lunches at home and can stick to their bedroom if they are feeling sick. your children develop strong family relationships and spend lots of time outdoors. They may take a few classes a week outside the home which means less driving and less exposure to the flu in winter.

Public School is not free.
